Saint Mawaji Maharaj was one of the great spiritual gurus of Wagad. He was considered as the
incarnation or avatar of Lord Vishnu. As per the historic tale, about 300 years ago saint Mawaji
did austerity at Baneshwar or Beneshwar in Rajasthan’s Banswara district on the confluence
of rivers namely, Mahi, Som, and Jakham. The saint did strong efforts for creating social
awareness among people, especially in tribal society.
In his fond memory every year in January or February (2 weeks following the new moon night
in the month of Magh in the Vikram Samvat calendar) fair is conducted at Beneshwar Dham
in Rajasthan. The Dham has situated 45 km. away from Banswara district. This fair is
considered a significant fair of tribals and is known as "the Kumbh Mela for the tribals".
Beneshwar Dham is a religious hot spot where devotees not only from Rajasthan but from
Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh come in a large number for darshan (Prayer) of Shiva temple and
take a dip in the holy river. The fair is organized in the compound or campus of Beneshwar
Shiva Temple. On the confluence of these three rivers, near Beneshwar temple, a Vishnu
temple is also situated. Here, people also perform asthi visarjan or submerge the remains of
the dead. The three rivers encircle the spiritually renowned Beneshwar island where one can
see a melange of diversified cultures and traditions.
